Motoring Awards 2019 finalistA close collaboration between the legendary automotive designer Gordon Murray and award-winning author Philip Porter, One Formula is a two-volume blockbuster that has taken more than two years to complete. Covering in detail every one of Murray's 70+ designs, including those he never built, the books are comprehensive, detailed, punchy and fascinating.

Apart from the design story, much of it in Murray's own words, the books are packed with illustrations from his extraordinary archives, including pages from his notebooks, original sketches, correspondence, drawings and behind-the-scenes photographs. These are supplemented by stunning period racing shots by many leading motoring photographers.

The range and breadth of Gordon Murray's automotive designs is unique: from World Championship-winning Formula 1 cars to his extraordinary flat-packed vehicle for Africa, from his pre-eminent McLaren F1 supercar to brilliant tiny city cars, from the first sports car he built himself to his revolutionary iStream manufacturing system, it is all in these two heavy and ultra stylish volumes.

One book sheds so much light on recent automotive history

So many stories, often from the era, and rarely proved. Until now. This book puts together so many strands together, ranging from business connections and personalities right the way through to technology. Formula One is naturally surrounded by a deeply competitive atmosphere, so developments from many years ago can still have strategic value - and hence, secrecy. One Formula not only looks at F1 but also an array of road cars. Each vehicle plays a significant role, either as a stepping stone or achieving greatness in it's own right. With exemplary use of text and many images not previously published, it gives a unique insight to one of the most iconic automotive engineers, and the approaches he took to solve problems in the pursuit of perfection on the track as well as on the road. Best of all, it was written with the full co-operation of Gordon Murray - it is his story, after all.

A masterpiece

This book is not cheap so was a bit apprehensive as I placed my order. However, everything GM is involved with is done to such fine thoughtful detail and this book is no exception. It’s very technical but also done in a very personal interesting way. I was also concerned how such a heavy but delicate object would fare in transit but the packaging, as assured in advance by Albert at Porter Press, was brilliant, and it arrived in perfect condition.
