Group C cars were admitted to the field, setting up a showdown between TWR Jaguar, Sauber-Mercedes, Porsche, Mazda and Peugeot. The screaming, rotary-engined Mazda 787B in the hands of Johnny Herbert, Volker Weidler and Bertrand Gachot overcame the challenge of the 7.4-litre Jaguar XJR-12s to win by two laps.
