‘For many years Lotus, like almost all sports car builders, followed the Italian, sharp edged design language, often called ‘folded cardboard style’. The new Lotus Elan, codenamed M100, presented an opportunity to develop a new, more organic and sensual body surface treatment. These two sketches are the first M100 theme drawings. By developing a new drawing technique, a mixture of pastel, marker and coloured pencil, softer forms were imagined which became part of a new look for Lotus.’ – Peter Stevens.
