Design & Desire Book Reviews

Octane, July 2024

'This 128-age hardback is brilliantly illustrated with over 160 images - many of which have been taken from Helfet's own archive. His working life is detailed from those earliest days all the way through to some of his most recent projects - including the intriguing Helfet Bike, stillborn Joule EV and a selection of MRI scanners. With the majority of the autobiography dedicated to the Jaguar years - with insight into the XJ41, XK180 and, of course, a large chapter on the creating of the XJ220 - it's great to learn about these projects from Helfet's perspective. A fantastic read.' MH

Historic Motor Racing News, May 2024

'Known best for shaping the XJ220, Jaguar designer Keith Helfet relates his time at the company and the stresses and delights of conceiving a record-beating supercar.'

'...there's also much personal insight into executing his ideas, backed by photos and sketches. Diversions into watches, medical gear and bicycles add quirky interest to a designer's life, who reflects "lost opportunities are an occupational hazard". GC

Auto Express, May 2024

'A LOOK into the work of a car designer is always interesting, and even more so when it's the man behind delights such as the Jaguar XJ220. With a portfolio that covers vehicles, products and even medical equipment, Helfet's career is intriguing, and he's an engaging writer too.'

Jaguar Enthusiasts' Club, Review by Wayne Scott

'As you'd expect from a book detailing the life of a designer, the imagery is breath-taking. Even though some of the photographs are of moments in history or cars that we are familiar with, most of them throw new light onto the subject by showing angles or behind-the-scenes images many of which we have never seen before. The book is written by Keith as a personal account of his life and so, in the first person, feels like a conversation with the man himself as he guides you through his favourite moments. The landscape format of the book also allows those images the size and breadth they need to 'pop' not to mention the fact that feels like a design portfolio in your hands as a result.'
