To Le Mans and back in my Austin 7

Words and images by Martin Port

Well, I not only made it there in the Austin 7, but I also made it back again! Epic trip, but with the added emotion of having done it in a car I built myself in less than a year… and for around £1100! Humbled by the reaction that this little plucky underdog generated - particularly when surrounded by vehicles costing 100 times more - and despite it being my 10th trip to Le Mans, this entire experience (including the highs, lows and anxiety-filled sleepless night) will long be remembered.

It was lots of fun and made the effort over the last 11 months well worth it. When someone said at the end of Le Mans last year, that I couldn't build one and drive it there this year, I was determined to prove them wrong!
